Ned Music Club
The woodwork company "Menuiserie Held" moved to Montreux in 1869, then left the premises in 1984. At this time, there is a dance troupe called "Dancers". This company rents part of the premises. They set up a room called the Espace Dancers, where, it seems, artists such as the late François Silvant took their first steps. In order to reduce their expenses, they sublet small independent surfaces to musicians from the region. The whole story of the musical alternative club Ned begins here...
Unfortunately, victims of poor management, the "Dancers" went bankrupt in 1991. Several friends took over the abandoned room. They are rebuilding the place called the "Nouvel Espace Dancers" (NED).
Until June 1995, a concert took place every two weeks, many contacts were made with the authorities, who were highly receptive and aware that Montreux was missing an alternative musical scene. July, August and September make it possible to remodel the place and to adapt it to the needs, thanks to a loan of more than 47,000 swiss francs granted by the municipality of Montreux, the official inauguration will take place on 30 September 1995.
Many artists and bands of all musical styles performed in this hall. Among many let's quote : Buju Banton, Candy Dulfer, Lofofora, Manu Katché, Max Romeo, Mother Superior, Nada Surf, Sinsemilia, Tryo, The Real McKenzies etc..
Many co-productions were shared with different local partners as "Sound For Unity", who, for example, booked following bands : Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, Guerilla Poubelle, The Tommys. Let's also mention "Skartnak.com" the alternative Montreux Webzine Punk-Hardcore-Metal partner who brought following bands to the NED : Raised Fist, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bridge To Solace, Darkest Hour, Neaera, Break The Silence, Good Clean Fun, Leftöver Crack, Dead To Fall, Cephalic Carnage or Street Bulldogs. And we should not forget the "Montreux Prog Nights Association" who regularly organizes Rock nights there.
Unfortunately, in the course of December 2007, the NED gets the termination of its lease. The proprietor (the bank BCV) wished to sell the building. The futur is, up to now, very uncertain for the NED after 14 years of extensive musical discoveries.
2019, with a new team, the Ned music club has more than 40 staff, all volunteers. Rap, hip-hop, metal, rock, electro, the concert hall wants to diversify to meet the maximum demand A few years ago, the Montreux concert hall was very active in the world of French and international rap, with artists such as KRS One, MOP, Onyx, The Beatnuts, Kurtis Blow, Delinquent Habits and Lonnie.
